The Basics on Skin Serums

First, what exactly is a serum?

A serum is a skincare product you apply to your skin immediately after cleansing and before applying any other skincare product, including moisturizer and sunscreen. Ingredients in a serum are found in smaller molecules than those found in lotion or cream, allowing them to penetrate more quickly and more deeply.  This “delivery system” is ideal for treatments that target specific concerns like dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles and blemishes.

How often should I use a serum?

How often you apply a serum depends on the specific treatment provided by the serum.  If it’s a retinol, like –ism SKIN’s Evening Meditation, it’s best to apply in the evening.  For a moisturizing serum like –ism’s Youthful Exuberance, you can apply as needed.  Always refer to the product instructions.

Tip:  A little goes a long way

Because serums are super potent, start gradually and see how your skin reacts, then build towards daily use.  Powerful ingredients can initially irritate sensitive skin but, used correctly, your skin will quickly reveal its potential and show signs of improvement.
